This IPE hardwood deck had lost its lustrous reddish-brown color due to prolonged exposure to the elements, developing the silver-gray patina characteristic of oxidized exotic woods. While IPE is incredibly durable, the homeowner wished to revive its original vibrant appearance. The challenge with dense hardwoods like IPE is ensuring that restoration methods are gentle enough to preserve the wood's integrity while being effective enough to remove the oxidation. Previous coatings had worn unevenly, and the surface required careful preparation to ensure the new protective oil would penetrate effectively without sitting on the surface and peeling.
We employed a specialized restoration process tailored specifically for high-density exotic hardwoods. The project began with a soft wash to remove surface contaminants and mildew without damaging the wood fibers. We then performed a light, precision sanding to remove the oxidized layer and open the wood grain slightly. This step is critical for IPE to accept treatment. Instead of a surface film that can peel, we applied a high-quality penetrating hardwood oil. This oil is designed to soak into the dense grain, nourishing the wood and enhancing its natural color while providing breathability and protection against moisture and UV rays.
